Johan knew he wanted a special proposal to Maleni while on their 4-year anniversary trip to Oahu. One thing I often here is “I want a location that screams Hawaii”. We have so many options, and that’s why I’m here to help you plan those fine details, like a location. It all depends on what draws you. In Oahu, we have such beautiful locations with lush greenery mountains, sandy white beaches, rocky terrain, beautiful palm trees, and even forest vibes. I helped Johan narrow down what location he loved by sending him a few galleries to look at. Ultimately he went with a beautiful beach in Ko’olina area called Paradise Cove Beach.
Planning a surprise proposal in Oahu
Now, Johan and I went over how this surprise proposal would go down. Being that both had never taken photos before a sunrise session allowed them to be pretty much alone on the beach. Since they were in Hawaii celebrating their anniversary we came up with the plan of taking some anniversary photos. This allowed Maleni to get dressed up, and throw her off the surprise trail some. I helped Johan come up with some outfit ideas to make sure they were photoshoot-ready.
We decided that a sunrise proposal would best fit because this allowed Johan to navigate some of those jitters. Johan thought he would be too nervous and preferred to propose mid-session instead of a full-on surprise proposal. I started the session like any other couples photography session, and my number one goal was to get them to have some fun. When I gave Johan the sign he got down on one knee. It was so fun to watch Maleni turn around in full shock. After the initial proposal, I gave the happy couple a few minutes alone before moving on to what now is an engagement session!
I love taking photos of couples after proposing because you can see the genuine love and happiness.
