As an elopement photographer based out of  Hawaii, I can tell you how to propose in Oahu Hawaii. Proposals are so fun to capture, and a lifetime memory. I mean setting up your cellphone is always fun, but if you’re wondering 9/10 times the nerves, excitement, and adrenaline will be so high you’ll forget. Besides, you don’t want to give the element of surprise by setting up your phone. Let me give you 3 quick reasons why you should hire a professional photographer for your proposal, and how to make a surprise proposal happen.

Why You Should Hire A Professional Photographer For Your Surprise Proposal

1: Epic moment: First of all, I’m there to catch ALL the emotions. Not only is this for your significant other but so much for you as well. Imagine having all those emotions captured in a still. These are forever memories you now can look back over, and over.

2: Have your loved ones feel included: For example, if you have decided you want to make this moment JUST between you two you’ll have photos to share with your family and friends. This is a great way to have parents, grandparents, and close friends feel included.

3: It’s a mini engagement session: After the proposal, personally I always do a mini session with my couples. So you get to show off THE RING and get some awesome engagement photos done all at the same time.

How To Keep The Proposal A Secret

  • If you two already make it a thing to have professional photos taken once, or a few times a year this will be easy. BUT, don’t fret if it’s not something you do often. I have a few ways around this.

Ideas For A Surprise Proposal

1: Go on a date night: Go ahead and tell your significant other you’re going to an expensive restaurant. This will ensure your significant other is looking their best. Secondly, I suggest that you make dinner reservations AFTER asking so you can celebrate. Make it an intimate occasion with just two, or have family and friends meet you there to celebrate.

2: Set up a photoshoot: This will work perfectly if you take professional photos at least once a year. For instance, you can say you randomly entered in a photography giveaway and win. Again, this will have your significant other looking sharp. Plan this with your photographer so they’re in on it.

3: Plan a vacation: Do you two love to adventure? Do you go on a yearly vacation? Plan around this to keep the element of surprise.

4: Make it about you two: After all is said and done, the most important part of this proposal is keeping it about you two. Is hiking every weekend your thing? Then pick their favorite hike, drop down on one knee and ask them to marry you.

These ideas at the end of the day are tailored to each couple, and every single one of them is different. My biggest advice is to make sure you’re both on the same page about marriage.

How To Keep A Surprise Proposal.. A Surprise

  • This will probably be one of the hardest parts to do. You’re excited, nervous, and so in love. But let me help you keep this surprise proposal a secret.

1: Tell a very small amount of family, and friends: First of all you don’t have to let anyone know, because at the end of the day the relationship is between two people. But, if you’re wanting to let some people in the secret I would suggest parents, and CLOSE friends (like best friends). The fewer people kn0w the less likely it can slip out, but I will say this can help ease some nerves.

2: Hide the ring well: Make sure the ring is in a location your significant other doesn’t look often.

3: Don’t use a joint account to purchase the ring: It well may be second nature to use your debit card, but make sure your significant other doesn’t notice.

How To Have A Smooth Proposal

  • Besides all the above information here are some ending tips.

1: Keep up with your routine: Don’t start doing things out of the ordinary because your significant other will notice the changes.

2: Get insurance for the ring: First of all ANYTHING can happen, and having insurance will just be extra protection.

3: Consider buying a cute ring box: They make for a safe space for the ring, a personalized ring box, and beautiful photo ops. Head over to Etsy and you find so many ring boxes. Maybe have a custom box made with your date engraved, pick their favorite color, or a ring box that has sentimental value for both of you.

4: Keep communication with your photographer: However you decide to keep communication make sure it’s open communication. If you can do a walk through I would highly suggest that. Ask exactly where you’re meeting, and when can they expect you to drop on one knee.

  • Sometimes the jitters get the best of you but make sure to stay down on your knee long enough to have it captured, actually ASK the question, and get up to hug and kiss your new fiance.
